Surf Club Midigama is our take on a seaside way of life: a Beach Club and Chalets on 120 metres of Midigama Beach, with Lazy Left breaking directly out front and everything a guest needs within the property. It is made by Utropic.
A small village on the south coast
Midigama is a small, laid-back village on Sri Lanka's south coast, between Ahangama and Weligama. It is known for its surf, its uncrowded stretches of coastline and a slower pace of life. It is quieter than the larger beach towns, and their restaurants, cafés and beaches are within easy reach.
This coastline holds some of Sri Lanka's best-known surf breaks: Lazy Left, Lazy Right, Rams, Plantations and Coconuts, for progressing surfers through to experienced riders. Weligama Bay, a short drive away, has gentler conditions that suit beginners.
To the east, Weligama and Mirissa bring more restaurants, cafés, beaches and whale watching. Ahangama lies the other way along the coast, and further west the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort makes an easy half-day or day trip. Midigama works well as a base: surf and the ocean on the doorstep, and the wider coast close by.
One property, two ways to use it
The Beach Club anchors the property: a restaurant, a bar and a coffee counter, a pool with floating sunbeds, and day beds on the sand, open from morning coffee until late. Music runs from open to close, with DJs and live musicians on selected nights. It is open to hotel guests, members and day visitors.
Along the beach sit the Chalets: five pastel two-storey buildings of Deluxe and Premier rooms, every one sea-facing with direct access to the beach, and a Club Premier on the top floor of the Club House. Four additional chalets opening for the Happy Surf Season, bringing the collection to 19 rooms.
The pool is 18.6 metres long and lined with pearl-white hexagonal tiles, which give the water its cobalt blue. Sunbeds are set along 120 metres of fine white sand. The natural reef makes the sea good for swimming in season, and the natural rock pool can be enjoyed all year.
Upstairs, the Living Room and The Terrace, opening soon, look over the pool and the ocean, for private dinners, events and pop-ups for groups of up to 150. A surf school by Perfect Wave is coming soon.
Pink cement, timber and rattan
The Club House is contemporary in design: layers of pink cut-cement walls, distressed timber columns, glass and rattan ceilings, planting, and artwork inspired by the beach, the surf and daily life in Midigama. It has the familiar feel of a traditional club house by the beach, with tables in the shade, bar seating, day beds and the sand directly ahead. The spaces are made to be comfortable for a long stay.
It was delivered by the local architects A Design Studio. The overall concept and product design are by Utropic.
Inside the Chalets the design is warm and understated: solid timber, contemporary tropical furniture, teak floors, woven natural materials, subway tiles, crisp white linen and brass. The Club Premier is finished with handmade Moroccan zellige tiles, each one cut by hand with its own shifts in colour, glaze and edge.
The five chalets are painted Orchid Lilac, Rosewater Blush, Salt Porcelain, Seafoam Pearl and Lagoon Blue.

Making places on the south coast since 2010
Utropic, founded by Dmitri Jayasuriya, has been making places on Sri Lanka's south coast since 2010. Surf Club Midigama is one of them.
